Doors Closing

Summary

This is probably going to be the most involved and demanding film in this project.  Doors Closing is a musical.  Not a full musical, more like the opening number to a musical that will never be filmed.  The best part about this is that we just need to introduce themes while not actually introducing any plot.  Who wants to work out a whole complicated script anyway?!  The premise at its most basic level is that a number of individuals are trying to catch the subway.  Every character will be introduced in their own verse, after which they will add their voice to an increasingly layered chorus. This will culminate with weaving the individual themes into the chorus while building to the rousing finish.  Like I said... a lot of work, but hopefully the crown jewel of this project.

Theme

Being that I am not writing the entire script for this musical, mainly because I only ever plan on filming the opening number,  I figured I needed a theme to help give it some sort of purpose.  I've spent a lot of time listening to opening songs from a number of musicals (is it weird that I have 17 musicals or quasi-musicals on my iphone) and there seems to be a few universal building blocks that are required.  Beyond introduce the characters, it seems the main purpose of any of these songs is to establish the theme for the rest of the show.  Occasionally extends to the point of bludgeoning you with it.  Hopefully I will not have to take it that far, or maybe I will.  Who knows?

Being that the setting for this musical is the subway and surrounding areas, the idea of transportation, or a journey, is the obvious place to start.  With that and mind I have decided on a two pronged theme.  The literal form of, "the journey is half of the adventure, not just a means to an end" and the more metaphorical needing to not live only looking to the future but to live in the here and now.  These ideas will be used to shape the characters, their back-stories and their motivations.

As always, comments are appreciated

Characters!

Now, I don't mean to use an exclamation point out of turn but, I have a rough draft of the character list for "Doors Closing".

The main cast will consist of 4 males and 2 females (This could change slightly in the casting stage but this is where I see it right now).

-Man late for his first day of work

-A tourist couple

-An over-achieving college student.  All work no play. Female.  (Because guys are lazy bums)

-A guy selling bootleg movies out of a duffle bag

-A homeless guy attempting to get someplace important but doesn't have money for the fare (If anyone has a suggestion for what this important place can be....)

I am interested in what everyone thinks of this list, and any suggestion you might have for fleshing out the characters (the 3 of you that check this site.)

Welcome All Masochists

Well everyone.  This is the film that is going to make me lose what is left of my hair.  Luckily I have already convinced Keith Roeckle to come on board and write the song and help with the lyrics.  Beyond the pre-production work, we will need to cast this as soon as we nail down the characters and the song.  Why?  Because we have to record this before we can even think of starting to shoot.  And the little thing that these people need to be able to sing as well.  Feel free to leave a comment or post something on the message board if you are interested.  I am looking for any character ideas you may have or subway stories that might lend themselves to this projects.  Thanks
